The Acai Bowl (That's a-sigh-ee)
So you've seen all the amazing Insta posts (me too) of amazing looking... Are they fruit platters? Or maybe you've heard or read about this crazy superfood call acai... How do you pronounce it? 👆🏼
maybe you've even experienced this bowl of deliciousness and goodness at your local superfoods cafe or health bar, and now you're addicted! So it's time to make your own! For those of you first timers who have heard about it, seen the pictures, but aren't 100% sure what you're looking at, an acai bowl is basically a super thick smoothie, covered in delicious toppings, that you eat with a spoon instead of a straw!
So, let's get creative! The best thing about an acai bowl, is there are no strict rules on how to make them, (as long as you include acai of course!) so you can adjust them to suit your own taste buds! This is just our basic, and crazy delicious, go to recipe. It is very basic and we want you to feel free to adapt it to your liking - so swap the fruits, alter the liquid you use (we also love coconut water or tropical juice), pick and choose your toppings like you're at a froyo bar and then most importantly, nail that Insta-worthy shot and show us your skills!
Here we go...Makes 2 bowls
YOU'LL NEED:
1 frozen banana
1 handful frozen mango
1 handful frozen raspberries
1/2 handful frozen blueberries
1/4 cup of apple juice
1 heaping scoop of acai powder
You will need a blender for this recipe.
SUGGESTED TOPPINGS:Fresh fruit - pineapple - strawberries - blueberries - raspberries - banana - mango - kiwi fruit... Honestly, almost any fruit will taste delicious!
Nuts and seeds - macadamias - almonds - pepitas - chia seeds - cashews.... Again, all delicious
Granola/ Breakfast cereals (we love nutrigrain on ours)
Honey
Cacoa nibs
Goji berries
Shaved coconut
Toasted coconut
Chocolate covered sultanas
Choc chips
Bukinis
Puffed rice
This is your chance to be creative! So show us what you come up with!
WANT A PROTEIN OR NUTRIENT HIT TOO? Just add a scoop on a neutral flavoured protein powder, or maca powder. Personally we don't recommend trying to add spirulina or veggies for this recipe - all you green smoothie goers out there! Keep it fruity!
HOW TO:
Pour your apple juice in to your blender
Now add all your fruits (if you want a slightly sweeter more acidic tasting bowl, you can opt to add pineapple, or for vitamin C kick, swap the apple juice for orange juice)
Add your large scoop of acai powder Blend until you get a thick smoothie texture, if it is too thick, you may need to add a little extra apple juice, if it is too runny, add a little more frozen fruit.
Now that you have achieved that delicious, icy, tasty, purple-y consistency, pour into two bowls (cute ones if you plan to Insta this - which we expect you to... Don't forget to tag us 🙋 @ohsweetlemon)
Finally, add your toppings !
Enjoy 😋
